How I became a business consultant and entrepreneur

Kendra Y. Hill, 33, lives in Atlanta, Georgia. She became an entrepreneur over 10 years ago after working for the U.S. House of Representatives, Google, the San Antonio Spurs, and celebrity stylist.

Kendra Hill runs Kendra Scale My Business, a consulting firm that helps companies and creatives across continents grow in revenue and brand visibility. From The Millionaire Project, a mentorship program for WOC business owners to The Milli Club, a community of like-minded entrepreneurs, Kendra is on a mission to turn entrepreneurs into millionaires.

Can you talk us through your career and what led you to where you are today?

For sure! Before starting my first business, I worked for the U.S House of Representatives, the UNCF, Google, and finally the San Antonio Spurs.

I remember the day I decided I wasn’t going to work for anyone anymore. I was sitting in a meeting listening to everyone talk, and it really just hit me how unfulfilled I was feeling. When the meeting was over, I walked to my desk, packed my stuff, and out I went! I just KNEW I had to go.

That’s when I decided to open up my own brand management firm that I ran for six years before deciding it was time to focus on my passion for fashion. I sold my business, and through an act of God, there I was working in the fashion industry!

I worked as a stylist for about two years, but pretty quickly knew I was ready for another change in direction. My plan was to focus on creative direction, but between my partner and God, I was being led into consulting. Before I knew it I was in Cancun, Mexico consulting a lodging brand and signing to consult with my first big retainer client in Toronto, Canada. January 5, 2020 I opened Kendra, Scale My Business, and that’s how I got to where I am today!

Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Not quite! I’ve always been good at a lot of different things but didn’t know exactly how that would pan out in my life. It wasn’t until 2011 when I decided I was bored with working for all these huge companies, and opened up my own brand management firm that I ran for the next six years.

What was it like working for the US House of Representatives, Google, and the San Antonio Spurs?

All of those jobs were great – for the most part. I had a lot of fun, especially working for Google. I also learned SO MUCH about corporate America in my time in those positions. Each role had its ups and downs of course, but I don’t know that I’d be where I am today if I didn’t get that type of experience early on in my career.

Have you had to overcome any challenges in your career? If so, how did you do it?

For sure! I think that one of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was actually STARTING my current business. God had told me that I needed to get back into consulting, but I was just not having it. I knew that I needed to make another change, but I had NO interest in getting back into the consulting world. Long story short – God got me TOGETHER at the end of 2019 and in 2020 I went full force into the consulting world and started my current company.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Get aligned with God for REAL because you have NO idea where He is about to take you! You can’t even begin to imagine what He has in store for you. So, do the work now to be prepared!

If there are any young women out there reading this, let this be your sign to take that risk and do whatever it takes to give yourself the life you really want! Don’t be afraid to step into your power.
